Why Invisalign® Is a Better Choice Than Traditional Braces

Most people think of awkward teenagers when they think about braces, but the truth is that many adults need braces, too, and for a variety of reasons. Sure, there are cosmetic benefits to straight teeth, but there are also good oral health reasons to have your teeth straightened.

However, as an adult, you may face barriers that teenagers don’t when it comes to getting braces. If your job involves public speaking, you may not be comfortable with the idea of a mouth of metal brackets and wires. Then there’s the time commitment involved, including appointments to have braces adjusted.

If you need to correct an alignment problem with your teeth, or if you have a hygiene issue due to crooked teeth, not getting braces could lead to bigger and worse problems. Don’t worry! Invisalign® treatment may be exactly what you need.

At Healthy Smile Dental in Woodridge, Illinois, Dr. Hannah Baek and her outstanding staff understand that your time is valuable and that sometimes traditional braces aren’t the right choice for you. That’s why we offer Invisalign clear aligners. Here’s how treatment with Invisalign is superior to getting traditional braces.

The Invisalign difference

The “Invisa-” part of the name Invisalign refers to the fact that the aligners are not super obvious — they’re nearly invisible. Someone would need to look very closely to notice your aligners. The appearance — or lack thereof — is thanks to a proprietary material called SmartTrack® used to make the Invisalign trays.

Another difference between Invisalign and traditional braces you’re sure to appreciate is the fact that you don’t need to modify your diet at all because of your braces. You take out your Invisalign trays while you eat, so you can enjoy whatever foods you want without fear of getting debris stuck in your braces.

When you get traditional braces, the initial appointments are cumbersome. With Invisalign, we use digital imaging, which is much easier and more comfortable for you. Invisalign uses the iTero Element® scanner to create a precise and accurate digital image of your teeth and gums. The device is about the same size as a ballpoint pen.

Perhaps the best part is that we use a computer to develop your treatment program. That means Dr. Baek can show you exactly what to expect during each step of the process even before you begin using your aligners. You can see in advance how your smile will progress as you go through the series of aligners you’ll wear with the program.

Are you a candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent choice for straightening your teeth, but in some instances, traditional braces are the best solution. For example, if individual teeth need to be rotated or if you need lateral tooth movement or vertical correction, the process of straightening your teeth is more complicated and may require braces.

Another important factor in your decision to seek Invisalign treatment is your own level of self-discipline. In order for Invisalign to work, you need to wear the aligner trays for at least 20 hours a day. If you tend to forget things, or if you simply don’t think you’ll wear the trays enough for them to be effective, you might consider regular braces.

The best way to find out if Invisalign is the better choice than braces in your case is to schedule an appointment and discuss your situation with Dr. Baek. She’s happy to answer your questions and make a treatment recommendation. Call the office or use our online booking tool today.
