Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry that serves to conceal the front surface of your teeth. They’re ultra-thin customized shells, designed to fit your set of teeth to improve the appearance of your smile. These shells, made out of tooth-colored materials, bond to the front of your teeth to change the appearance of their color, shape, size, or length.

What types of dental problems do veneers fix?

Upon the suggestion of Dr. Baek, most patients opt for veneers to fix:

  • Teeth that are discolored from stains, a root canal treatment, the presence of large resin fillings, or other causes
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Teeth with gaps between them

What does a dental veneer procedure involve?

Getting a veneer can require a few dentist visits. The first involves a consultation, a diagnosis, and treatment planning. Dr. Baek may need to take X-rays or make impressions during this session.

Your next appointment typically involves a removal of about a half millimeter of enamel from your tooth to prepare the tooth for a veneer. Dr. Baek will then make a model or impression of your tooth if it hasn’t already been done, which is sent out to a dental laboratory for the construction of your veneer.

Your dental veneer should be ready in about two to four weeks when you return to Dr. Baek for the application. She will trim and adjust the veneer as much as needed to reach its ideal fit before it’s permanently bonded to your tooth. Your teeth are then cleaned, polished, and etched to enable a robust bonding process. A special cement is applied, hardened, and polished to finish off the veneer application process.

What are benefits of getting a veneer?

Veneers offer several benefits to the look and feel of your teeth:

  • A natural tooth appearance
  • Gum tissue that tolerates porcelain well
  • Porcelain veneers that are stain resistant

They also don’t require the extensive shaping prior to the application procedure that crowns do.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers typically last anywhere between seven and fifteen years before they need to be replaced.
