Dr. Baek’s secret to optimal oral health

The best secret is that there isn’t just one secret or magic trick to make your mouth healthy. The real secret is that good oral health is the result of many strategies.

You can always take your brushing and flossing to the next level

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without discussing brushing and flossing, but there are still tips to take your flossing and brushing to the next level. For example, did you know that you should hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle? This helps clean along your gum line and can help reduce your risk of gum disease.

In addition to how you hold your brush, don’t skimp on the time. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth for two full minutes. That’s only about four seconds per tooth!

Flossing isn't optional. In fact, in some cases, it can be your only defense against cavities that your toothbrush can’t reach. There’s a secret here too: You don’t necessarily need to use regular floss. Many options feature the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. The American Dental Association search and filter feature allows you to view all of the approved products for flossing, which includes waxed floss, soft interdental picks, pre-threaded floss picks, and refillable floss string.

Your dental cleanings help prevent problems

Imagine being able to stop a potential problem before it happens. That’s what routine dental cleanings can do. Scheduling routine visits allows Dr. Baek to catch potential issues early and prevent them from evolving into more significant problems.

Routine dental exams also include X-rays (to spot any hidden cavities between your teeth), oral cancer screenings, and discussion of any symptoms (such as sensitivity) that you may have.

Your food choices impact your oral health

You probably know that certain foods, such as sticky candy, aren’t good for your teeth and can increase your risk of cavities, but the opposite is also true. Some foods can help improve the health of your gums and teeth.

For instance, vitamin C helps promote healthy gums, and without enough vitamin C, you may develop swollen or spongy gums. You can find vitamin C in citrus fruit, broccoli, red peppers, tomatoes, and strawberries.

Other foods that support your oral health include grass-fed dairy products, fatty fish, and dark leafy greens.
